Types of Childbirth Brain Injuries

Brain injuries sustained during childbirth can be caused by a number of factors, including obstetrical negligence and medical malpractice, and may include:

  • Anoxia and Hypoxia. The lack of oxygen can cause serious brain damage. Lack of oxygen to a newborn can occur when an obstetrician or other medical professional fails to respond in a timely and appropriate manner to placenta complications, contractions too close together, prolapsed umbilical cord, fetal distress, infections, preeclampsia, eclampsia, and drops in blood pressure. Failure to perform a timely c-section, prolonged labor and delivery, and severely low blood pressure (of fetus or mother) can all result in anoxia or hypoxia.
  • Ischemia. When blood flow to the brain is inadequate or restricted, brain cells may begin to die, which can result in permanent brain damage or even death. Failure to perform a timely c-section, prolonged labor and delivery, and severely low blood pressure (of fetus or mother) can all result in ischemia.
  • Forceps Injuries. Obstetricians use forceps to remove the baby from the birth canal. If the forceps are used inappropriately or improperly, the baby may suffer from nerve damage, muscle weakness, or cerebral palsy.
